But where can churros come from? If you answer that they come from funfairs, Christmas markets, stalls on the beach or traveling circuses, you are not entirely wrong… But if we want to know the origin of the very first churros , you have to go back in time! Contrary to popular belief, churros were not born in Spain but in China. And these churros were originally salty! We were still a long way from our funfair churros… Traveling Portuguese merchants would have tasted this delicious fried preparation that the Chinese called youtiao and they would have been won over (we can’t blame them!). So they would have brought the recipe with them to Portugal and had the idea to add sugar rather than salt. Then this delight crossing the border, the Spaniards would decide to give them a star shape. The fun fair churros were born! Here is a recipe of chocolate churros full of flavors that will surely return you to childhood.

Ingredients:

For the churros:

  • 50 g of rice flour
  • 100 g of corn starch
  • 25 cl of water,
  • icing sugar
  • oil for frying
  • One pinch of salt.

For the chocolate sauce:

  • 150 g of chocolate
  • 100 ml of fresh whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon (s) of Nutella

Preparation of the recipe

  1. In a large bowl, combine 50 g of rice flour and 100 g of cornstarch and make a well in the middle.
  2. Bring the water to a boil and pour it into the bowl, stirring vigorously.
  3. Cover the churros dough with a tea towel and let stand 1 hour. Heat the oil in a deep fryer.
  4. Place the dough in the churros maker or in the pastry bag and press to obtain pieces of dough. Cut them to the length you want with scissors.
  5. Brown the churros in the oil, turning them once or twice (about 3 minutes), then remove them from the oil using a skimmer. Sprinkle with icing sugar.
  6. Chocolate sauce: heat the cream and pour it over the chocolate broken into pieces and the Nutella. Let stand a few minutes before stirring.
  7. Serve hot with the churros.
